15th April – A tour of The Wolds and Vale of Pickering. Leader: Paul Hildreth
A visit to Rifle Butts SSSI to understand the effect of the Market Weighton High on Cretaceous/Jurassic sedimentation and the unconformity between them.

We then visited the old chalk quarry at Langtoft – fantastic folding and fault fracture with evidence of slickensides and original stylolite surfaces too.

We stopped briefly at Staxton Hill to consider the Vale of Pickering.

The day finished with a visit to the West Bretton Farm reef quarry; fore reef and back reef sedimentation in the Upper Jurassic. An abundance of fossils and subsequent reef edge also visible. A line of large brachiopods also apparent – differing environmental conditions. Curious quarrying practice too.
